A protest took place last Friday, November 8th, to demand the halt of the construction of a residential project in Fuentes Brotantes park, which includes the building of 52 homes with 147 parking spaces. This project, managed by the company Graus, would occupy 9,519.17 square meters of one of the most important green spaces in Mexico City.
During the mobilization, held near the Fuentes Brotantes Metrobús station, the negative environmental impact derived from the daily use of more than 114,000 liters of water was denounced. In response, the Tlalpan municipality issued a statement denying the authorization of the Residential Fuentes Brotantes 134 project, claiming that they do not have the authority to assess the environmental and urban impact of the area.
In that statement, Tlalpan authorities explained that the administrative procedures related to the project were carried out during the previous administration. They also highlighted that since the beginning of the current administration, there has been close collaboration with the residents of Santa Úrsula Xitla to address their concerns.
In light of this situation, the residents of Tlalpan called for a 'cacerolazo' as a show of rejection to the environmental impact and the gentrification associated with the construction project in Fuentes Brotantes park. The demonstration is scheduled for next Wednesday before a planned meeting with the mayor of Tlalpan, Gabriela Osorio, in the esplanade of the demarcation.
The protesters expressed their opposition to the cutting down of hundreds of trees in Santa Úrsula Xitla and encourage the community to participate in the 'cacerolazo', asking them to bring utensils to make noise and to use the hashtag #YoDefiendoFuentesBrotantes on social media as part of the awareness campaign on this issue.
